As Australia opens it’s doors again - is it time you considered your next move?
The term ‘Work Life Balance’ dates back to the 1930’s and has been a hot topic ever since. Today, getting the balance right between a meaningful career, income and all-important leisure time seems as elusive as ever for many of us. Working hard has been sold to us as ’stoic’, yet we know that not enough leisure time, not only leads to unhappiness, but particularly in dentistry can be very detrimental on the body.
What is very often missed when considering work/life balance is the environment you place yourself in has the biggest impact to getting the balance right. Let’s say you like long walks on a beach - if you live and work five minutes from your favourite beach, you are far more likely to access your favourite activity each day, before or after work or even on a lunchtime, than if the beach is a one-hour commute through slow moving traffic. The beach is just one example, but the same principal can be applied to each and every pleasurable activity you do outside of the dental practice, including getting home in time to spend with the family.
The other thing that is very often overlooked is the true value of your income which varies wildly depending on where you live, even though your earning capacity does not. For example, the median house price in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney, arguably one of the prettiest areas of Sydney to live, with access to coastal walks, the harbour and beaches, is over $6m. Whilst the median house price in Noosa in Queensland is less than $1.5m, yet it is one of the most lifestyle-oriented areas of Australia, with beaches, bush, everglades, city access and Fraser Island on tap. And here is the kicker - the price of dentistry in Noosa is equally as high as the Eastern suburbs of Sydney whilst the competition (patient to dentist ratio) is less. Private school fees are lower in Noosa than the Rose Bay or Double Bay, you will probably end up driving a 4WD which will cost less than trying to keep up with the neighbours 911 Porsche and buying your organic fruit and veg from Noosa’s farmers market on a Sunday morning is not only a nice way to spend a few hours, but you also don’t need to take out a loan, which isn’t true for some of the rather pleasant, but stupidly overpriced greengrocers in Paddington or Bondi. What this means, is you could consider working three or four days a week and yet have a higher disposable income, instant access to the activities you love, more time with those you care about and truly have your chosen Work / Life balance in order.
If I have got you thinking about escaping to a better lifestyle, I have a couple of exceptional opportunities for you to consider:-
