Man dies after getting root canal at Melbourne dentist: inquest


A 36-year-old man who went to the dentist for a procedure stopped breathing half an hour after getting into the chair, his inquest has heard. A Coroner’s Court of Victoria inquest that started on Tuesday is investigating if Michael Anderson’s death in the dental chair at the age of 36 was preventable.

Slight increase in CDBS rebate fees announced by Federal Government


The Federal Government has recently announced a slight increase to the rebate fees in the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (the CDBS), from January 1, 2021. This represents an average increase of 1.3% for services with the maximum amount available to eligible patients increasing by $13 to a total amount of $1013 over two years. There do not appear to be any changes to the rules governing the scheme nor to the CDBS's item numbers.

How poor oral hygiene may result in metabolic syndrome


Researchers have identified a novel mechanism by which periodontal disease may cause metabolic syndrome. By studying patients with metabolic syndrome, the researchers demonstrated high antibody titers against Porphyromonas gingivalis, the bacterium causing periodontal disease. In a mouse model, the researchers then showed that infection with this bacterium causes systemic insulin resistance and metabolic dysfunction in skeletal muscle by altering the gut microbiome. This study shows the effect periodontal disease can have on the entire body.
