One in three Australian adults has untreated tooth decay


A third of Australian adults aged 15 years or more has untreated tooth decay, results of a national oral health study led by the Australian Research Centre for Population Oral Health (ARCPOH) at the University of Adelaide show. The National Study of Adult Oral Health 2017-2018 is the third population-based study of its kind in Australia, involving data from more than 15,000 adults aged 15 years or more in each state and territory.

'Unacceptable' gaps in dental health for older Australians


With one quarter of people aged over 65 living with complete tooth loss and more than 65 per cent of them reporting difficulty eating, the Australian Dental Association NSW says oral care needs to become a priority. In a submission to the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety, the Australian Dental Association NSW said poor oral health in older people was estimated to cost $750 million per year.

Dentist explores future at forum


Local dentist Damian Chung was recently chosen as the only dentist from Australia to attend the first expert development program on the future of digital dentistry held in Germany last month. German company Dentsply Sirona ran the event for 60 dentists around the world over two days on November 22 and 23.

Smiles Inclusive sells two QLD practices to 1300SMILES


Embattled dental company Smiles Inclusive's (ASX: SIL) cash position will receive a well needed boost after selling two practices in Queensland's Lockyer Valley region to 1300SMILES (ASX:ONT). The practices in Gatton and Laidley were sold by SIL subsidiary Totally Smiles for an undisclosed sum, and the group is also considering selling its Gympie and Toowoomba practices as part of a turnaround strategy.

USA: Dentist filmed riding hoverboard while extracting a patient's tooth


As Veronica Wilhelm lay sedated in a dental chair, her dentist was filmed riding a hoverboard while he extracted her tooth. Wilhelm says she didn't know about the hoverboard, or that her procedure in July 2016 was captured on camera. She found out only when investigators contacted her to confirm she was the patient in the video.
