Queensland dentist whose tools were not sterilised properly cops fine


A Cairns dentist and his company have been hit with fines of $150,000 for failing to have adequate infection control practices which put patients at risk of serious diseases including hepatitis C and HIV. Kenneth Hossen pleaded guilty on Monday in the Cairns Magistrates Court to the charge of breaching infection control practices and was fined $50,000 personally. His company, Monacove Pty Ltd, which operates Essential Dental for Life in Smithfield, was also fined $100,000 for breaching requirements of the Public Health Act 2005.

Orange juice reclassified under Health Star Rating System


A decision by the Australian and New Zealand Ministerial Forum on Food Regulation has seen orange juice go from a five-star designation under the Health Star Rating System to as low as two. It reflects a decision by the Forum to focus on the amount of sugar when classifying food and drinks under the Health Star Rating System which is meant to help customers understand the health benefits of various packaged and processed foods.

UWA researcher Marc Tennant awarded funding to develop dental consultation app


A UWA researcher has been awarded $50,000 in research funding to develop an app that allows parents to take photos of their children’s teeth on their smart phone, then send them off for evaluation by a dentist. The funding was among a raft of $3.2 million in State Government funding for UWA researchers to tackle COVID-19 health challenges.

A young woman who went to the dentist while suffering stomach pains was shocked when she suddenly gave birth in the dentist’s chair. Jessica Aaldering, 23, had no idea she was pregnant when she was walking past the practice of dentist Rene Klaassen in the town of Velp in the Netherlands, and suddenly started to get stomach pains.
