Unregistered 'dental surgeon' banned from practising over risk to public


A man who claimed to be a dental surgeon has been banned from offering dental work after the Health Care Complaints Commission found he performed root canals and other treatments despite never being registered as a dentist.

Fake Sydney dentist guilty of at-home treatments


A Brazilian national who pretended to be a dentist and carried out treatments in a makeshift clinic in his Sydney home has been found guilty and fined. Eduardo Soares Penques did not appear in Downing Centre Local Court on Tuesday when he was fined $16,500 and convicted for claiming to be a registered health practitioner and carrying out a restricted dental act.

Recent media coverage has highlighted the emergence of a novel coronavirus (nCoV) that originated in a food market in Wuhan, China in December 2019 before spreading globally, including possibly to Australia. Symptom onset of confirmed nCoV cases began as early as 8 December 2019 with the cluster of infection first reported publicly on 31 December 2019.

Abano makes a small half year profit


Dental group and takeover target Abano Healthcare's half year profit has fallen sharply on one-off costs and a struggling Australian business. The owner of Lumino The Dentists in New Zealand and Maven Dental Group in Australia, made a net profit of $115,000 for the six months ended November, compared with $6 million in the same period last year.
