Dentistry snapback as patients rush back in June


The managing director of listed dentistry group 1300 Smiles says there has been a big rebound in revenues in June as customers return to the dentist after nationwide shutdowns in April. Dr Daryl Holmes, who runs the group with 35 dental practices across Queensland, Sydney and Adelaide, said on Monday it is crucial that Australia avoids blanket rules across the nation in the next phase of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The University of Sydney has just launched a new master's degree in dental public health that brings together dentistry and public health disciplines to transform oral health at a population level. The new Master of Dental Public Health (MDentPH) program, is subject to accreditation by the Australian Dental Council (ADC) and approval by the Dental Board of Australia.

Gum disease may raise risk of some cancers


People who have periodontal (gum) disease may have a higher risk of developing some forms of cancer, suggests a letter published in the journal Gut detailing a prospective study. US researchers found that a history of periodontal disease appeared to be associated with a raised risk of esophageal (gullet) cancer and gastric (stomach) cancer and this risk was also higher among people who had lost teeth previously.

Smile: Atomic imaging finds root of tooth decay


A collaboration between researchers from Cornell University, Northwestern University and University of Virginia combined complementary imaging techniques to explore the atomic structure of human enamel, exposing tiny chemical flaws in the fundamental building blocks of our teeth. The findings could help scientists prevent or possibly reverse tooth decay.
