New research reveals alarming delay in senior dental care


Renewed calls for a dental benefits scheme have been made after new research found seniors delayed or completely putting off going to the dentist due to costs. Research released by the Council of the Ageing (COTA) Australia has found that almost 37 per cent of Australians over 55 have not gone to the dentist in the past year due to the expense. The number increased to 44 per cent of older Australians on lower incomes, which included many pensioners and residents in aged care.

Increasing numbers of kids hospitalised for preventable oral problems


Thousands of kids are hospitalised unnecessarily every year for oral health conditions that are entirely preventable - and it’s a trend that’s getting worse... New data... shows almost 11 in every 1,000 children aged 5-9 were admitted to Australian hospitals for preventable dental conditions in 2021-2022, compared to 9.5 per 1,000 in 2018. Further, 14 in every 1,000 Indigenous children aged 5-9 were admitted ... in 2021-2022, compared to 11.5 per 1,000 in 2018.
